
Teresina is a Brazilian city, capital of the state native of northeastern Brazil from Piauí and it is the only capital of the Northeast Area that is not in the coast. History THE origin of the city is tied up to Rio Poty (or Rio Poti, that gave name to the New Villa of Poti, later denominated Teresina in honor to the Imperatriz Teresa Cristina, woman of Dom Pedro II. It was founded in 1832 with the designation of New Villa of Poti. The city is the capital of the State since 1852, when consultant José Hails it founded it, transferring the administrative thirst of the County of Piauí of the city of Oeiras for the current capital, Teresina. Characteristics THE city of Teresina is the headquarters of a municipal district with about 800 thousand inhabitants and 1.680 km². It is located in the microrregião of Teresina, mesorregião of Center-north Piauiense. The city is placed among the river Parnaíba and the river Poti, belonging to the basin hidrográfica of the river Parnaíba. The education section is another area of reference of the Capital, that counts today with more than 25 higher education institutions, attracting students of several States, notedly of the areas North and Northeast. In the industry, he/she stands out the textile industry and of makings, that it exports for another areas and it generates about ten thousand employments. There are still assemblers of bicycles, industries of drinks, medications, chemistry, pieces of furniture and ceramic, among another. The civil construction (that had great pulse in the last fifteen years with the verticalização of the City) and the growing tourism (so much the tourism of business and events all that uses the hotel net of the city to visit other areas of the state) they also have growing economic importance.
