The first name dice to current Porto Alegre was it of Porto of Viamão, in the century XVIII. I eat an urban center, the estancieiros of the area it didn't still exist they took advantage of Guaíba as middle of communication with Big Rio and Brown Rio. The area, at that time known as fields of Viamão, it was a district of Lagoon (in Santa Catarina). The port, like this, it was known like Porto of Viamão.
In 1740, the area was granted as sesmaria Jerônimo of Ornellas, Portuguese born in the island of the Wood. In consequence, the port became called of " Porto of Dorneles ". In agreement with the historian Walter Spalding, the port properly statement was in the mouth of a small stream, where now it is located Ponte of Stone of the Plaza of Açorianos.
In that same time, the Portuguese government motivated the coming of couples açorianos to the area, with the intuito of solving two problems: the first was the superpovoamento of the islands of Açores, and the second was to seat the Portuguese dominance in the south of Brazil, area threatened by the Spanish colonies of the south and west of the South American continent. Thus, in 1752 the first recruitment of couples açorianos arrived, that settled then in the Porto of Dorneles and they served as support point to the new couples immigrants that arrived to settle in another areas of Big Rio of the South. With that recruitment of couples, the port became known like " Porto of the Couples ".
In 1763, with the Spanish invasion of the city of Big Rio, then capital of the State, the government's headquarters ended for being transferred for Viamão, city adjacent to Porto of the Couples. With the development of the port and its strategic position to the beira of the river Guaíba, the governor of the time, José Marcelino of Figueiredo, decided to transfer the capital of Viamão for Porto of the Couples in 1773, changing on that occasion the name for Porto Alegre.
